Chem Film

Silvex provides advanced chem film applications with exceptional corrosion resistance and reliable conductivity for aerospace, defense, and industrial components. Chem film is a widely used industry term for chromate conversion. Chem film is also known as Alodine or Iridite, two branded names that are also commonly used to describe chem film.

Chem film coating is an excellent metal finish when you need corrosion protection and paint adhesion without adding thickness, nor sacrificing electrical conductivity (which rules out anodizing). Instead of adding a thick layer like anodizing or plating, chromate conversion coatings chemically convert the surface of the metal (hence the name) into a thin, passive film that resists oxidation and gives paint a surface it can adhere to.

In addition to improving paint adhesion, chem film enhances the durability of metal surfaces, protects against corrosion, and maintains electrical conductivity, making it an essential finishing process for a variety of critical applications.

When to use Chemical Film Coating

Chem film, or chromate conversion, is a versatile surface treatment that creates a thin, protective layer on aluminum surfaces through a controlled chemical reaction. It is used when the protection and durability of metal parts are especially crucial, as in the aerospace, defense and automotive industries.

Chem film is also a cost-effective treatment. The process is fairly uncomplicated and when performed efficiently, has a short production timeline.

Benefits of Chem Film

Because of the benefits listed below, chem film is a crucial choice for industries that prioritize performance, durability, and compliance with modern environmental standards.

  • Exceptional Corrosion Resistance: Protects against oxidation and environmental damage, extending component lifespan.
  • Improved Paint Adhesion: Chem Film is an ideal primer for paint and coatings, ensuring a smooth and durable finish.
  • Low Electrical Resistance: Class 3 coatings provide reliable conductivity for sensitive electronic applications.
  • Dimensional Integrity: Chem Film leaves part dimensions unaffected, maintaining precision and fit.
  • Environmental Compliance: ROHS and ELV-compliant chem films are available and free of hazardous substances such as cadmium, lead, hexavalent chromium, and mercury.

Chem Film Types & Classes

Silvex adheres to strict industry standards, including MIL-DTL-5541F and ASTM B 449, to provide exceptional chromate conversion coatings.

There are two primary types of chem film and Silvex offers Type II, which does not use hexavalent chromium, which makes it environmentally friendly.

In addition to the two types, chem film treatments are also divided into classes. The class is designated by the thickness of the coating and classes can be either Type I or Type II.  There are two primary classes:

  • Class 1A: A thicker coating that provides maximum corrosion resistance, even if the part is left unpainted. The thicker coating makes it ideal for parts exposed to severe environmental conditions or requiring long-term reliability.
  • Class 3:  A thinner coating, which allows for excellent conductivity for electronic and electrical components, and provides moderate corrosion resistance. It is the best choice for applications where low electrical resistance is crucial.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is chem film or chromate conversion coating?
It’s a surface treatment that forms a corrosion-resistant conversion layer on aluminum parts. It’s also called Alodine or Iridite, depending on the brand.

What is the difference between clear and yellow chem film?
Clear coatings are less visible and often used for aesthetic or electronic purposes, while yellow coatings typically offer slightly better corrosion resistance and visibility.

Does chem film offer electrical conductivity?
Yes, it provides excellent conductivity and is often used on parts where electrical grounding is required.

Is chem film a good primer for paint?
Yes, it enhances paint adhesion and is frequently used as a pretreatment in aerospace and defense coatings.

What standards does Silvex meet for MIL-DTL-5541 coatings?
Silvex offers both Type I (hexavalent) and Type II (trivalent) coatings per MIL-DTL-5541, depending on your compliance and environmental requirements.
