Passivation Specification

Silvex offers precision passivation services to enhance the durability and corrosion resistance of stainless steel components. Our processes ensure that these critical parts meet the demanding requirements of the aerospace and industrial manufacturing industries.

Passivation is essential for removing surface impurities, protecting stainless steel from premature corrosion, and ensuring reliable performance in the harshest environments.

What Is Passivation?

Passivation is a chemical process that cleans stainless steel by removing iron contaminants left behind from machining or fabrication. Removing these impurities reduces the likelihood of rust, which can damage the material’s integrity. The process purifies the surface and creates a thin, transparent oxide layer that shields the steel from environmental factors, such as moisture and chemicals.

While passivation significantly boosts corrosion resistance, it doesn’t correct imperfections like burrs or discoloration from heat. However, it restores stainless steel to its original corrosion-resistant state, extending its longevity and maintaining its high performance.

How Does the Passivation Process Work?

Depending on the alloy and application requirements, the passivation process involves immersing stainless steel parts in a specially formulated solution, typically nitric or citric acid. SIlvex currently offers citric acid passivation services.

Key steps include:

  • Cleaning: Thoroughly remove grease, oils, and dirt that could interfere with the chemical reaction.
  • Chemical Treatment: Parts are submerged in a passivating solution that eliminates iron contaminants and promotes the formation of a protective oxide layer.
  • Rinsing: This step neutralizes and washes off residual chemicals to leave a clean, contaminant-free surface.
  • Verification: We regularly test components with salt spray or humidity tests to confirm their enhanced corrosion resistance.

Choosing the Right Passivation Process

Selecting the most effective passivation method depends on factors like the type of stainless steel alloy and the component’s intended use. Our team carefully calibrates the passivating solution’s time, temperature, and concentration for precise, consistent results.

Primary Passivation Methods:

  • Citric Acid Passivation:
    • An environmentally friendly alternative free of hazardous chemicals.
    • Excellent for industries that prioritize sustainability.
    • Delivers reliable corrosion resistance without compromising performance.
  • Nitric Acid Passivation:
    • Incorporates 20–25% nitric acid, often with sodium dichromate, for added effectiveness.
    • Ideal for aerospace, medical, and industrial applications where proven performance is critical.
    • Requires controlled conditions, with temperatures ranging from 50–55°C (120–130°F) and a minimum immersion time of 20 minutes.

Testing and Validation

At Silvex, we validate every passivation treatment with rigorous testing to ensure effectiveness:

  • Salt Spray Test: Simulates corrosive environments to evaluate the effectiveness of the protective layer.
  • Copper Sulfate Test: Detects free iron on the surface, confirming the removal of contaminants.
  • Potassium Ferricyanide Test: Verifies the stability and uniformity of the protective oxide layer.

These tests ensure that components meet the highest corrosion resistance and reliability standards.

Specifications for Passivation

Silvex adheres to the following industry-leading specifications for passivation:
